Rokumeikan

Rokumeikan, Tokyo · Meiji era

Two women's dresses, one purple and one yellow, catch the eye in the right foreground. The Western-style building behind them is the Meiji-era Rokumeikan.

About this print

A large two-story Western-style building is drawn at the back on the left. People in Western clothes walk along the road in front of it, and in the right foreground are two women in purple and yellow dresses. Green trees and lawn can be seen on the left side.

The Rokumeikan was designed by the British architect Conder and completed in 1883. Foreign Minister Inoue Kaoru built it as part of a Westernization policy meant to advance treaty revision. It was a place for entertaining guests from abroad and for the upper classes to mingle, and balls and evening parties were held there.
