金沢城
Kanazawa Castle
Kanazawa Castle, once the seat of the Maeda family, lords of the Kaga domain. The army was stationed here in the Meiji era, and a fire in 1881 destroyed many buildings, though the Ishikawa Gate, the Sanjikken Nagaya storehouse and a few others survived. From 1898 it housed the headquarters of the 9th Division.
About this photo
This photo shows Kanazawa Castle in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. It appears in Nihon no Meisho (Famous Sights of Japan), an album of well-known places published in 1900 (Meiji 33).
Maeda Toshiie moved into Kanazawa Castle in 1583, and it became the seat of the Maeda family, lords of the Kaga domain. In the Meiji era the army was stationed there. A fire in 1881 destroyed many buildings, sparing the Ishikawa Gate, the Sanjikken Nagaya (a long storehouse) and a few others, and from 1898 the castle housed the headquarters of the army's 9th Division.
After World War II the site became the campus of Kanazawa University. When the university moved away, it opened as Kanazawa Castle Park in 2001. The Ishikawa Gate and the Sanjikken Nagaya are Important Cultural Properties, and the Hishi Turret, the Gojikken Nagaya and other buildings have been rebuilt in wood.
