Exterior of the Konjikido, Chusonji

Chusonji, Iwate · Before 1907 (Meiji era)

The Golden Hall of Chusonji from the outside. What we see, though, is not gold walls but most likely the wooden Shelter Hall (oido) that protected it from wind and snow. The Shelter Hall did that job until 1962 and now stands a short distance away.

About this photo

This photo shows the Konjikido (Golden Hall) of Chusonji in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture, from the outside. What we see is probably the Shelter Hall (oido) that housed it. It appears in Hiraizumi Shi (Record of Hiraizumi), published in 1907.

In the Meiji era, the Golden Hall stood inside a wooden Shelter Hall that protected it from wind and snow. This hall is thought to have been built about 600 years ago.

The old Shelter Hall protected the Golden Hall until 1962. When a new reinforced-concrete Shelter Hall was built, the old one was moved a short distance to where it stands today. It is an Important Cultural Property of Japan and can still be seen on the temple grounds.
