京都祇園 佐々木なかゆ
Sasaki Nakayu, Gion
About this photo
A portrait of a woman of Gion, Kyoto, from Kyoto Osaka Imayo Bijin Fuzoku (Beauties of Today in Kyoto and Osaka, 1903). She wears a flower-shaped kanzashi in her hair and lightly touches the collar of her kimono, which is scattered with flowering branches.
A well-known kind of flower-shaped kanzashi is the tsumami kanzashi. Small squares of cloth are pinched with tweezers and folded into petals, then built up on a paper base. It is said to have begun when a technique for petal kanzashi made in Kyoto in the early Edo period was carried to Edo and developed there. Because they were pretty and reasonably priced, by the middle of the Edo period they were popular as souvenirs of Edo for those returning home from sankin kotai, the lords' required stays in Edo.
