京都祇園 小島ふく
Kojima Fuku, Gion
About this photo
A kimono that looks like a solid dark color, with an obi in a diamond lattice pattern. She sits holding a closed folding fan (ogi) in one hand, with the other hand resting on a tall frame. This photo is from the album Kyoto Osaka Imayo Bijin Fuzoku (Beauties of Today in Kyoto and Osaka, 1903), and the name under it reads "Kyoto Gion, Kojima Fuku."
The fan is an essential tool for dance. The dance of Gion Kobu, one of the hanamachi (geisha districts) of Gion, is the Inoue school of Kyomai (Kyoto dance). Its dance fan (maiogi) has a crest left white on a gold ground, and the stepped pattern at its base is said to gain more steps as a dancer's training advances. Maiko and grown geiko also use different fans. A geiko's fan has white ribs and is 9 sun 5 bu (about 29 centimeters) long. The reading of the name is our best guess.
