Mount Takao

Takao, Kyoto · Before 1909 (Meiji era)

About this photo

Rocks lie scattered in a stream running through the valley, and further back a bridge crosses the river. On the left is a building with overhanging eaves. It is included in the photo album Kyoto Meishocho (Album of Famous Places in Kyoto), published in 1909 (Meiji 42).

Takao is an area along the Kiyotaki River, which flows through the mountains of Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, and it has long been known for its autumn leaves. Jingoji stands partway up Mount Takao, and its halls line the top of a long approach that climbs from Takao Bridge over the Kiyotaki River. Kawarake-nage, throwing unglazed clay dishes to ward off bad luck, is said to have begun at this temple.

Part of the stream flowing down from Takao to Kiyotaki is called Kin'unkei (Valley of Brocade Clouds) because autumn leaves color the valley, and it is now a hiking trail.
