Otabisho (Resting Place of the Deity), in Kyoto City Hall

Kyoto City Hall, Kyoto · Before 1917 (Taisho era)

Heads packed tightly together fill the lower half of the picture. The history in the album describes the Jidai Festival as a grand festival that the whole city of Kyoto joins in.

About this photo

A large crowd is jammed in front of a long building lined with pillars. Above the building runs a black band, a roof or eaves. Several whitish shapes can be seen in the middle of the crowd, and the people toward the front right appear larger.

The history in the same album gives October 22 as the day of the Jidai Festival. It says that the people of Kyoto, all together, accompany the deity when it comes out in procession, and it closes with the words "a grand festival indeed."

Follow the building's pillars, and at the left and right ends, white pillars stand in a row with gaps between them. Around the middle, the row of pillars is hidden by the crowd and the white shapes.
