那覇市街全景
Panorama of Naha
About this photo
This photograph takes in a wide view of the town of Naha. It appears in Nihon Meisho Kyuseki Sangyo Shashinshu (Photographs of Japan's Famous Places, Historic Sites and Industries), in the volume on the Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu regions, published in 1918 (Taisho 7). The title does not tell us where it was taken from.
Naha began as Ukishima (Floating Island), an island in the inlet where the Naha and Asato rivers flow in. In 1451 it was linked to the opposite shore by the Chokotei causeway, and as the port prospered, the "Four Towns of Naha" (Nishi, Higashi, Wakasa-machi and Izumizaki) took shape. Naha became a ward in 1896 (Meiji 29) and a city in 1921 (Taisho 10). This photo collection came out three years before it became a city.
In an air raid in 1944, 90 percent of the city burned, and the Battle of Okinawa left the town in ruins. After the war, mergers with Shuri City and Oroku Village in 1954 and with Mawashi City in 1957 gave today's Naha City its shape.
