北新地 森席菊勇
Kikuyu of Moriseki, Kitashinchi
About this photo
She rests one hand on a book open on the desk and draws the other hand to her chest. Her kimono has thin stripes and her obi a large pattern. The name under the photo reads "Kitashinchi, Moriseki Kikuyu."
In 1903 (Meiji 36), the year the photo album Kyoto Osaka Imayo Bijin Fuzoku (Beauties of Today in Kyoto and Osaka) came out, the Fifth National Industrial Exhibition was held in Osaka. It ran from March 1 to July 31. It had two sites, at Tennoji and Imamiya in Osaka and at Ohama in Sakai, with exhibits from 14 countries and 18 regions, and it drew more than 5.3 million visitors. Keeping the grounds open at night and lighting them with illuminations was groundbreaking, and on the pond at Chausuyama, Japan's first water chute (a ride in which a boat slides down a slope) was built.
The Tennoji site later became Tennoji Park and Shinsekai.
