Autumn Leaves at Takinogawa

Takinogawa, Tokyo · Before 1902 (Meiji era)

Right beside a dark slope, finely branched trees stand out brightly. Around Takinogawa, the Shakujii River runs through a deep valley, and the area was famous for its autumn colors.

About this photo

A slope of dark, dense trees stands sharply apart from a mass of bright, finely branched trees. The leaves overlap softly, and higher up they blur into haze and melt into the sky. Lower down, a bright streak crosses the picture in a gentle arc.

Around Takinogawa, the banks of the Shakujii River form a deep valley, and people came here to cool off in summer and to see the leaves in autumn. Where it flows through Kita Ward, the Shakujii is also known as the Otonashi River. Cherry blossoms in spring, and green maples and bathing under the waterfalls in summer, drew holidaymakers to its banks season after season.
