高岡大佛
Great Buddha of Takaoka
About this photo
This photo shows the Great Buddha of Takaoka at Daibutsuji temple in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. It appears in the photo album Yakushin Toyama-ken (Toyama Prefecture on the Rise), published in 1938 (Showa 13). Judging from the book's date, the statue shown is thought to be the bronze Buddha completed in 1933.
The Great Buddha of Takaoka is a seated figure of Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha). The first statue was made of wood in 1745. It burned in a fire, and the second statue, built to replace it, was also lost in the Great Takaoka Fire of 1900. The bronze Buddha was then made with donations from around the country, bringing together the skills of Takaoka, a town known for metal casting.
It stands about 16 meters tall. Along with the Great Buddhas of Nara and Kamakura, it is sometimes counted among the "three great Buddhas of Japan," and it is still a beloved symbol of Takaoka.
