双筆五十三次 平塚

Hiratsuka, from Fifty-three Stations by Two Brushes

Hiratsuka, Kanagawa · 1854 (Edo period)

Holding a black stand loaded with dishes, a woman tips her head back and turns her face up. Beside her, a child clutching a black box looks up at her face.

About this print

The stand has legs, and several dark, round dishes sit on it. The woman's kimono is striped in gray and blue, with a red check pattern peeking out. The child on the right wears a patterned kimono with a red collar. The view above is a broad stretch of blue water. Past the gray shore lies a dark green wood, and behind it a gray mountain rises in a rounded mass.

A title in the records of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, identifies the view above as the ferry crossing on the Banyu River. The figures are said to show a serving woman at an inn carrying in food.
