双筆五十三次 川崎

Kawasaki, from Fifty-three Stations by Two Brushes

Kawasaki, Kanagawa · 1854 (Edo period)

Lifted in both hands, a pale patterned cloth spreads wide overhead. In the inset above, a boat with a white sail crosses a broad river.

About this print

Holding up the cloth is a woman in a patterned blue kimono with a red obi. At the lower left, a child in a red kimono reaches toward her. To the right is a brown box that looks like a chest of drawers, and at her feet sit several small round dishes.

The inset above is by Utagawa Hiroshige, and it shows the ferry on the Rokugo River. Between green banks, the white-sailed boat makes its way across. Beyond the river runs a range of gray mountains, and past them, a small white-capped peak shows.
