Rental Rooms in Takasagocho, Yokkaichi
About this print
A street corner where white andon (paper-covered lamps) stand in a long row along an avenue of cherry trees in full bloom. Inside a fence, women look at the blossoms, and in the street people walk together and a rickshaw runs by with a passenger. This print shows Takasagocho in Yokkaichi and belongs to Tokai Meisho Kaisei Dochuki (Famous Places of the Tokaido, Revised Travel Guide), an 1875 series by Utagawa Hiroshige III. The kashiseki in the title were businesses that rented out rooms for banquets and other gatherings.
Yokkaichi-juku was the 43rd post town counting from Nihonbashi in Edo. It was land ruled directly by the shogunate, with a daikansho (magistrate's office), and it had 98 hatago inns. Between Yokkaichi and Miya-juku (Atsuta) there was also a sea crossing called the Juri no Watashi (Ten-Ri Crossing).
