東京開化三十六景 今戸橋隅田川
Imado Bridge and the Sumida River, from Thirty-six Views of Modern Tokyo
On the far bank, trees in white and pale pink blossom stretch along like a band, while a rickshaw crosses the bridge in front. Across the river from Imado lies Mukojima, whose embankment has been famous for cherry blossoms since the Edo period.
About this print
Besides the rickshaw, the wooden-railed bridge carries a figure in a navy kimono and another holding a black umbrella. On the left stand a house with a large black tiled roof and a row of white-walled houses, with one person on the bank in front of them. A few boats float on the blue river that spreads from the center to the right.
Imado Bridge crossed the Sanyabori, a canal running west from the Sumida River. In the Edo period, the Sanyabori was the route for boats heading to Yoshiwara, and they passed under Imado Bridge on the way. The canal has since been filled in and is now a long, narrow park.
