武蔵秩父山中
In the Chichibu Mountains, Musashi Province
About this print
This nishiki-e (multicolored woodblock print) shows the mountains of Chichibu in western Saitama Prefecture. It belongs to Shokoku Meisho Hyakkei (One Hundred Famous Views in the Provinces), a series in which Utagawa Hiroshige II pictured famous places around Japan, published from 1859 to 1861 (Ansei 6 to Bunkyu 1). The title does not say which mountain or valley in Chichibu is shown.
Chichibu is a region centered on a basin ringed by mountains. In the Edo period the Chichibu Fudasho pilgrimage, a circuit of 34 Kannon temples around the area, became popular and drew many visitors from Edo. The festival of Chichibu Shrine also grew grander from the mid-Edo period, along with the bustle of the silk markets.
Chichibu Shrine's annual grand festival, the Chichibu Night Festival, was inscribed on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016 as part of the Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festivals of Japan. The mountains west of Chichibu were made a national park in 1950 and are now part of Chichibu Tama Kai National Park.
