上野公園内之景

Scene in Ueno Park

Ueno, Tokyo · Meiji era

About this print

A whitish path runs straight into the distance between stands of tall cedars. A woman holding a parasol walks with a small child, and at the end of the path we see a gate and stone lanterns lined up in front of a wall. This picture of the cedar grove in Ueno Park is from Kobayashi Kiyochika's Kiyochika Gajo (Kiyochika Picture Album).

In 1924 (Taisho 13), Ueno Park was granted by the imperial household to the City of Tokyo. The word onshi (imperial gift) was added to its name at that time, and its official name is Ueno Onshi Park.

The park is home to the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Western Art, the National Museum of Nature and Science, Ueno Zoo and more, making it one of the leading centers of culture in Tokyo.
