名勝八景 富士暮雪

Evening Snow on Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji · Edo period

White streaks of snow run down Mount Fuji from its summit. Near the horizon, the indigo sky takes on a tinge of orange.

About this print

Against a deep indigo sky, snow-capped Mount Fuji rises in the center. A long band of white cloud stretches across its middle slopes, and below it, houses with brown roofs cluster among the trees. Beside one of the houses on the left is a small shape that looks like a person.

The "hakkei" (eight views) in the original title, Meisho Hakkei, follows the naming pattern of the Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang, a classic theme of Chinese landscape painting showing eight scenes in Hunan Province. "Bosetsu" means evening snow. One of the eight, "River and Sky in Evening Snow," shows snow falling on a river at dusk. In Japan, too, the Eight Views of Omi, around Lake Biwa, include "Evening Snow on Mount Hira."

Follow Fuji's right-hand slope all the way to the edge of the picture, and a second, smaller peak appears low on the horizon. It is far paler than the Fuji in the center, as if about to melt into the orange sky.
