尾張名古屋城
Nagoya Castle
Beyond layers of tiled roofs in the foreground, the keep of Nagoya Castle in Owari Province rises into the sky. This is the keep as it stood before an air raid burned it in 1945.
About this photo
The keep rises in tier upon tier of roofs, and to the left a slightly lower building stands close beside it.
Completed in 1612, the keep burned in the 1945 air raid. The keep standing today was rebuilt in 1959. The original keep's golden shachihoko (kinshachi) roof ornaments were taken down for a time in the early Meiji era and put back on top of the roof in 1879.
Look closely at the ends of the topmost roof, and two ornaments rise there like horns, small against the sky.
