Aomori Streets in Snow

Aomori · Before 1915 (Taisho era)

About this photo

This photo shows the streets of Aomori wrapped in snow. It appears in Aomori-ken Shashincho (Aomori Prefecture Photo Album), published by the prefecture in 1915 (Taisho 4). The title does not say which part of town is shown.

Aomori is one of the snowiest cities in Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency's climate normals, total snowfall over a winter exceeds 5 meters (567 centimeters), and the entire city is designated a special heavy-snow area. It is sometimes described as the snowiest large city in the world.

In May 1910 (Meiji 43), five years before this album came out, the Great Aomori Fire destroyed many homes. We don't know when the photo was taken, but the book appeared while the town was recovering from the fire. Aomori is still the northernmost prefectural capital on Honshu, and every winter the town is buried in deep snow.
