青森市街
Streets of Aomori
About this photo
This photograph shows the streets of Aomori City. It appears in Aomori-ken Shashincho (Aomori Prefecture Photo Album), published by Aomori Prefecture in 1915 (Taisho 4). The title does not tell us which part of the town is shown.
Aomori began in 1624, when the Hirosaki domain started building a port at the village of Uto. It grew as a port town, and in 1871 (Meiji 4) the prefectural office was placed there. In 1891 the railway from Ueno reached Aomori, and in 1908 the Seikan ferry began service to Hakodate in Hokkaido, making it the port town linking Honshu and Hokkaido. It became a city in 1898.
The center of town was badly damaged in an air raid in July 1945, but it recovered after the war. It is still the capital of Aomori Prefecture, a port town facing Mutsu Bay.
