Hachiman Shrine Festival

Hida, Gifu · Before 1900 (Meiji era)

About this photo

This photo shows a festival at a Hachiman shrine in the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. It appears in Nihon no Meisho (Famous Sights of Japan), a photo album published in 1900 (Meiji 33).

In Hida, the best-known Hachiman shrine festival is the annual festival of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine in Takayama, the Autumn Takayama Festival (Hachiman Festival). The photo's title alone, however, does not tell us whether this is that festival.

The Autumn Takayama Festival is held every year on October 9 and 10, when 11 yatai (lavishly decorated festival floats) are drawn out and lined up together. The Takayama Festival float events are an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, and in 2016 they were also inscribed on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
