Dogo Onsen

Dogo Onsen, Ehime · Before 1900 (Meiji era)

Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama. At Dogo Onsen Honkan, the public bathhouse at its heart, the three-story wooden Kami no Yu (Bath of the Gods) was built in 1894, and the Yushinden, with baths for the imperial family, was added in 1899. Look for the small tower on the roof.

About this photo

This photograph shows Dogo Onsen, a hot spring in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. It appears in Chiri Shashincho (Geographical Photo Album), published in 1900 (Meiji 33), in the volume that introduces places around Japan.

At the heart of the hot spring is the public bathhouse Dogo Onsen Honkan. Its three-story wooden main building, the Kami no Yu (Bath of the Gods), was completed in 1894, and in 1899 a wing called Yushinden, with baths for the imperial family, was added. With a small tower on top of its roof, the building is a beloved symbol of Dogo.

The Honkan was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1994. Conservation work began in 2019, and the whole building reopened in July 2024.
