About this photo
This photograph shows Himeji Castle in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, seen from the north. It appears in Himeji Shi (Himeji Chronicle), published in 1912. The era changed from Meiji to Taisho at the end of July 1912, and the month of publication is not known, so it is unclear whether it came out in the last year of the Meiji era or the first year of the Taisho era.
In the Meiji era the castle came under the control of the army, and the 10th Infantry Regiment was stationed around it. From 1910 (Meiji 43) into the following year, the government paid for major repairs to the main keep and other buildings. This album came out the year after those repairs were finished.
The keep later went through the great Showa restoration (1935 to 1964) and another restoration in the Heisei era, and it still shows how it looked in the Edo period. In 1993 the castle was added to the World Heritage List.
