博物館
The Imperial Museum, Kyoto
About this photo
This photo shows a building at the Kyoto National Museum in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, which seems to be the Meiji Kotokan. It appears in Kyoto Meisho (Famous Sights of Kyoto), published in 1907 (Meiji 40). The caption reads "Kyoto Museum" in Japanese and "Imperial Museum Kyoto" in English, but the official name at the time was the Kyoto Imperial Household Museum.
In 1889 (Meiji 22), the Imperial Kyoto Museum was formally established. Its building, designed by Katayama Tokuma, an architect of the Imperial Household Ministry, was a single-story brick structure completed in 1895 (Meiji 28), and the museum opened in 1897. It was renamed the Kyoto Imperial Household Museum in 1900, the Kyoto Museum, a Gift of the Emperor, in 1924, and the Kyoto National Museum, its present name, in 1952.
In 1969 the building was designated an Important Cultural Property, along with the front gate. Since 2015 it has been closed to exhibitions while plans move ahead for work to protect it against earthquakes.
