The Art Museum, Kyoto

Kyoto · Before 1907 (Meiji era)

About this photo

This photo shows what appears to be an art museum in Okazaki, Kyoto, with a fountain in the foreground. It appears in the photo album Kyoto Meisho (Famous Sights of Kyoto), published in 1907 (Meiji 40), under the title "Kyoto Bijutsukan" and with the printed English caption "The fine Art Museum."

In 1895 the 4th National Industrial Exhibition was held in Okazaki, timed to coincide with the celebration of the 1,100th anniversary of the capital's move to Heian-kyo (Kyoto). Six pavilions, including an industrial hall and an art museum, were built on land that had been rice paddies and turnip fields, and more than 1.13 million people visited in four months. The exhibition's art museum stood just east of Heian Shrine. In 1911 it was moved to the site of today's Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art and became the First Industrial Hall (Daiichi Kangyokan).

That building was also taken down in 1931, and in 1933 the Kyoto Museum of Art, built to commemorate the imperial enthronement, opened on the site. It is today's Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art. It reopened in 2020 after renovation, and its main building is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
