Nishi Otani (Shinran's Mausoleum)

Otani Honbyo, Kyoto · Before 1907 (Meiji era)

About this photo

This photograph shows people on a stone bridge and the approach path at Otani Honbyo, known as Nishi Otani, in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto. It appears in Kyoto Meishocho (Album of Famous Places in Kyoto), published in 1907 (Meiji 40) by the Kyoto City Council. The bridge seems to be Entsu Bridge, which spans the entrance to the approach.

Otani Honbyo is the mausoleum of Shinran, cared for by Nishi Honganji. A fire in 1867 destroyed the Buddha hall and other buildings, and the Buddha hall was rebuilt in 1870. The Meichodo, which stands in front of Shinran's tomb, dates from 1709 and escaped the fire. The main gate was remodeled into its present form in 1796.

People still come to pray here, wishing to have their remains laid to rest near Shinran. The grounds hold about 13,000 graves, and indoor ossuaries called Muryojudo were built in 1968 and 1990.
