Nishi Honganji

Nishi Honganji, Kyoto · Before 1909 (Meiji era)

About this photo

Beyond the branches of a pine tree, the roof of a great hall of Nishi Honganji comes into view. In the pale, open temple grounds, a few people can be seen walking or standing still. The photo appears in Kyoto Meishocho (Album of Famous Places in Kyoto), published in 1909 (Meiji 42).

The Goeido (Founder's Hall) was rebuilt in 1636 and the Amidado (Amida Hall) in 1760, and both are National Treasures. The great ginkgo tree on the grounds is said to have sprayed out water during the great fire of 1788 and saved the Goeido from the flames.

In 1994 the temple was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto."
