伊勢二見の浦

Futaminoura

Futami, Mie · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

Off Futaminoura in Ise, a scatter of dark rocks breaks the line of the horizon.

About this photo

Toward the left, two rounded rocks sit side by side, and in the middle the largest, a triangular rock, points its tip at the sky. In the foreground, rolling lines of waves stack up one behind another.

Pilgrims to Ise long made it a custom to purify themselves at Futaminoura before going on to the Grand Shrine. The Meoto Iwa, or Wedded Rocks, on this shore are seen as a torii gate for worshipping a sacred rock out at sea.

At the foot of the two rocks on the left, waves crash and burst white, wrapping the base of the rocks as if in mist.
