陸前松島之景
Matsushima
Beyond the dark mouth of a hollow in the rocks, the water of Matsushima, in Rikuzen Province, opens out, shining white.
About this photo
On the left edge of the opening stand a few leafy trees, the tips of their branches showing against the bright sky. Across the water, the low outline of a shore or an island stretches long and flat.
Matsushima is a view of many small, pine-topped islands scattered across a single bay. Matsushima Bay is thought to have become the island-filled sea it is today after the Ice Age, when part of the land sank and the sea level rose.
Right in the middle of the opening's lower edge, a person sits with their back to us, a dark silhouette. The bright water spreads out in the direction they're facing.
