伊勢内宮神苑
Garden of the Inner Shrine (Naiku), Ise
In front of Ise's Inner Shrine (Naiku) lies the Shrine Garden. Between the pillars of a towering torii gate, leafy trees and bright sky show through.
About this photo
A thick crossbeam runs near the top edge, with a second one a little below it. From the foot of the pillars to the foreground the ground is dark, and in the lower left corner there is a black shape that could be a tree trunk or a fence.
In front of the Inner Shrine, which is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the area where the garden is now was once crowded with the houses of shrine priests. In the Meiji era, the Shin'enkai, a society of local volunteers, bought up the land to guard against fire, laid it out as a garden of pines and lawns, and presented it to the Grand Shrine. The Shin'enkai was founded in 1886.
The upper crossbeam juts out past the pillars.
