The Seafront Road at Matsushima

Matsushima, Miyagi · Before 1908 (Meiji era)

About 260 islands large and small dot Matsushima Bay, and this is the road along its shore, Matsushima Kaigan-dori. Near the road stand the Godaido hall, rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1604, and Zuiganji, a temple that is a National Treasure.

About this photo

Matsushima is a scenic area in the town of Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, where about 260 islands large and small dot Matsushima Bay. It is counted among the Three Views of Japan (Nihon Sankei). The photo's title tells us it shows the road along the shore of the bay.

On the shore stand the Godaido hall, rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1604, and Zuiganji, a temple that is a National Treasure. The area has drawn visitors for centuries. The album containing this photograph, Gyokei Kinen Shashincho (Photo Album Commemorating an Imperial Visit), dates from 1908 (Meiji 41). As its title says, it was made to mark a visit (gyokei) by a member of the imperial family.

The shore area is still the center of sightseeing in Matsushima. Tour boats cruise the bay, and visitors can reach Godaido to pray by crossing a red bridge with open gaps in its deck.
