仙台市街
Streets of Sendai
About this photo
This photo shows the streets of Sendai. It appears in Nihon Shashincho (Photo Album of Japan), published in 1912 (Meiji 45). The photo's title does not tell us which part of the city it shows.
Sendai is a castle town that Date Masamune created. He chose it as the site of his castle in 1600 and began laying out the town below the castle the following year. The streets were built on a grid, measured from Basho no Tsuji, the crossing where Omachi Street, running east to west, met the Oshu Kaido highway, running north to south. The railway from Ueno arrived in 1887, and Sendai became a city in 1889.
The city center burned in air raids in 1945, but it was rebuilt after the war, and in 1989 Sendai became a designated city, a status given to Japan's major cities. Today, nicknamed the "City of Trees" (Mori no Miyako), it is the largest city in the Tohoku region.
