About this photo
This photo shows Aoshima in Miyazaki City. It appears in Shinto Miyazaki Shashin Gaho (Pictorial of Miyazaki, City of the Gods), published in 1937 (Showa 12).
Aoshima is a small island about 860 meters around, jutting out into the Hyuganada Sea. On the surrounding shore, layers of hard sandstone and soft mudstone have been worn by the waves into rocks that look like rows of boards. This is the Oni no Sentakuita, the "Devil's Washboard," officially called the Uplifted Sea Floor and Odd-Shaped Wave-Eroded Rocks of Aoshima. The inside of the island has long been protected as the sacred ground of Aoshima Shrine, and subtropical plants such as fan palms grow thickly there.
The Devil's Washboard was designated a Natural Monument in 1934. The island's plants became a Natural Monument in 1921 and in 1952 were designated a Special Natural Monument as the Aoshima Subtropical Plant Community.
