Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell), Beppu
It looks like the sea, but the water is about 98 degrees Celsius. Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) in Kannawa, Beppu, holds a pool of cobalt-blue hot water. Facilities for sightseers were built here in 1910, and this is considered the start of the full-scale jigoku meguri, the tour of Beppu's hot spring "hells."
About this photo
Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) is a hot, blue spring in the Kannawa area of Beppu, Oita Prefecture. In Beppu, hot springs like this are called jigoku, or hells. The cobalt-blue pond looks like the sea, but the water is about 98 degrees Celsius, and its blue color is explained as coming from the large amount of iron sulfate dissolved in it.
According to the site's own information, it is said to have been formed by an eruption of Mount Tsurumi about 1,200 years ago. Facilities for sightseers were built here in 1910 (Meiji 43), and this is considered the start of full-scale jigoku meguri, the tour of Beppu's hells.
In 2009 it was designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty as one of "the Hells of Beppu," together with Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell) and others. It remains one of the highlights of the hell tour today.
