Great Cycad of Myokokuji, Sakai

Sakai, Osaka · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

At Myokokuji Temple in Sakai, a dark mass of foliage stretches across the full width of the photo, its thin leaves bursting out in every direction.

About this photo

Along its top edge, leaf tips stick up one after another against the sky. The title calls it the "great sotetsu," or great cycad, of Myokokuji.

Myokokuji, in Sakai, is a head temple of the Nichiren school. The cycad in its grounds is now a National Natural Monument, under the name "Myokokuji no Sotetsu." Legend has it that when Oda Nobunaga had the cycad moved to Azuchi Castle, it wept night after night, saying "I want to go back to Sakai," and so it was returned to the temple.
