Ishiyamadera Temple

Ishiyamadera, Shiga · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

A hall faces us gable-end on. To its right, trees grow thick and dark. This is Ishiyamadera Temple in Omi, today's Shiga.

About this photo

Ishiyamadera, in Otsu, is a head temple of the Toji Shingon school and the 13th of the 33 temples on the Saigoku pilgrimage. Its halls are built on wollastonite rock, which gave the temple its name, and the rock on the temple grounds is now a national Natural Monument. The temple is also known for "Autumn Moon at Ishiyama," one of the Eight Views of Omi.
