Streets of Tokushima

Tokushima · Before 1912 (Meiji era)

About this photo

This photo shows the streets of Tokushima City. It appears in Nihon Shashincho (Photo Album of Japan), published in 1912 (Meiji 45). The photo's title does not tell us which part of the city it shows.

The town of Tokushima began when Hachisuka Iemasa, who became lord of Awa in 1585, built a castle there on Toyotomi Hideyoshi's orders. He is said to have changed the place name from Inotsu to Tokushima at that time. Around the castle, which used several rivers as moats, Iemasa brought in merchants from Sakai and elsewhere to build a castle town, and a temple district grew up at the foot of Mount Bizan.

An air raid on July 4, 1945, burned much of the city. The castle site is now Tokushima Central Park, and the Tokushima Castle ruins, where stone walls remain, were designated a Historic Site in 2006 (Heisei 18). Today the city is known throughout Japan for the Awa Odori dance festival.
