Mukojima
A big tree spreads its branches like a roof over a single rickshaw. The thin rim of the rickshaw's large wheel stands out against the bright water.
About this photo
Standing toward the right, a thick-trunked tree spreads its branches wide across the upper part of the picture. Beneath them, bright water opens out, and the far bank fades into haze. At the foot of the tree stands a lone rickshaw.
Mukojima lies on the east bank of the Sumida River, in what is now Sumida Ward, Tokyo. A popular place for outings since the Edo period, it was known for gardens such as the Hyakkaen and for its teahouse restaurants. The cherry trees along the riverside embankment remain a famous sight.
