櫻之宮

Sakuranomiya

Sakuranomiya, Osaka · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

Beneath the branches of big trees, low buildings peek through, small in the distance. At Sakuranomiya in Osaka, the trees cover the upper right of the picture.

About this photo

Several large trees stretch their branches out sideways. Between the trees, a bright area and low buildings show through in the distance. A single thin, post-like object stands in the middle, and flat ground spreads out underfoot.

Sakuranomiya, the name in the title, is a shrine on the east bank of the Okawa (the former Yodo River), and the area around it takes its name from the shrine. From the Edo period on, the riverbanks here were among Osaka's famous spots for cherry blossom viewing.
