大隅 さくらしま
Sakurajima, Osumi Province
About this print
This nishiki-e (multicolored woodblock print) depicts Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is one sheet from Utagawa Hiroshige's series Rokujuyoshu Meisho Zue (Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces), published in 1856, which shows one famous place for each province of Japan.
When this print came out, Sakurajima was, as its name says (shima means island), an island in the sea. In the great eruption of January 1914, lava filled in the sea, and Sakurajima became joined to the Osumi Peninsula to the east. It is considered the largest eruption in Japan in the 20th century.
Sakurajima is still an active volcano that erupts again and again, and people live at its foot. In 2013, together with Kinko Bay, it was certified as a Japanese Geopark, the Sakurajima-Kinkowan Geopark.
