阿波 鳴門の風波
Wind and Waves at Naruto, Awa Province
About this print
This nishiki-e shows the Naruto Strait, between Naruto in Tokushima Prefecture and Awaji Island. It is one print from Rokujuyoshu Meisho Zue (Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces), a series by Utagawa Hiroshige, published in 1855 (Ansei 2). Nishiki-e are multicolored woodblock prints, and this series shows one famous place for each province of the country.
In the Naruto Strait, the rise and fall of the tides creates a difference in water level between the two sides. Whirlpools form where the fast current in the middle meets the slower water on either side. They are biggest at the strongest tides of spring and fall, when whirlpools up to 20 meters across can appear.
The Onaruto Bridge opened in 1985. Today, from the glass floor of Uzu no Michi (Whirlpool Path), a walkway inside the bridge, you can look down on the whirlpools from about 45 meters above the sea. You can also see them up close from sightseeing boats.
