岡山城之圖
Okayama Castle
About this print
This picture shows Okayama Castle in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture. It is one of the pictures in Saiyu Kaido Zue (Pictures of the Road West), a hand-copied book (shahon), so it was painted with a brush rather than printed as a woodblock nishiki-e. The record does not say when it was painted.
Okayama Castle was built in 1597 by Ukita Hideie, one of the Five Elders who served the Toyotomi family. Its black-boarded exterior has earned it the name Ujo, "Crow Castle." Before the war, the keep was designated a National Treasure.
The keep burned in an air raid in 1945 and was rebuilt in 1966. The Tsukimi Yagura (Moon-Viewing Turret) and the Nishinomaru Nishite Yagura (West Turret of the West Enclosure), which escaped the fire, are Important Cultural Properties.
