阿波鳴戸真景
True View of Naruto, Awa Province
About this print
This nishiki-e, a multicolored woodblock print, shows the Naruto Strait in Tokushima. It is one sheet from Shokoku Meisho Hyakkei (One Hundred Famous Views in the Provinces) by Utagawa Hiroshige II, and the record gives the artist simply as "Hiroshige." The series came out from 1859 to about 1861, and the record does not give a year for this sheet.
Hiroshige II was a pupil of the first Hiroshige, and he depicted famous places across Japan following models such as his teacher's Rokujuyoshu Meisho Zue (Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces). The tidal currents of the Naruto Strait are said to be among the three greatest in the world, and at spring tide, the strongest tide of the month, they reach about 20 kilometers per hour.
Today the whirlpools can be seen from Uzu no Michi (Whirlpool Path), a walkway on the Onaruto Bridge, or from sightseeing boats. Their size changes with the time of the tide, and they are especially impressive around spring tide in spring and fall.
