東海道 桑名

Kuwana on the Tokaido

Kuwana, Mie · Edo period

About this print

This nishiki-e, a multicolored woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikata, shows Kuwana, a post town on the Tokaido highway, in what is now Kuwana, Mie Prefecture. It is one sheet from Gojoraku Tokaido (The Tokaido on the Shogun's Trip to Kyoto), a series by 16 artists on the shogun Tokugawa Iemochi's trip to Kyoto in 1863 (Bunkyu 3). The records give no year of publication.

Kuwana was the 42nd post town on the Tokaido. It was the landing place for the Shichiri no Watashi, a boat crossing of seven ri (about 27.5 kilometers) across the sea from Miya-juku in Atsuta. This was the only sea route on the whole Tokaido. Kuwana was also the castle town of Kuwana Castle, which Honda Tadakatsu began building in 1601.

The landing site is now a Mie Prefecture historic site, the Shichiri no Watashi Ato. The "First Torii of Ise Province" standing there is replaced each time Ise Grand Shrine holds its sengu, the periodic rebuilding of its shrine buildings. The Banryu Yagura turret has also been reconstructed nearby.
