秋田市大町通
Omachi Street, Akita
About this photo
This photo shows Omachi Street in Akita. It appears in Nihon Shashincho (Photo Album of Japan), published in 1912 (Meiji 45).
Omachi was one of the tomachi, the "outer towns" laid out for townspeople beyond the castle after Satake Yoshinobu built Kubota Castle in 1604 (Keicho 9). It was among the first to be developed as a center of trade, and wealthy merchants from Tsuchizaki are said to have moved there. The Ushu Kaido highway ran through the town, fabric shops and money changers lined the street, and not only people of the castle town but also travelers from other provinces came and went.
In Omachi today, the former head office of the Akita Bank, completed in 1912, survives as the Akarenga Kyodokan (Red Brick Museum) and is an Important Cultural Property. The former Kaneko family house, a late Edo-period merchant house, is also open to the public as a Tangible Cultural Property of Akita City.
