富士屋ホテル
Fujiya Hotel
Foreign guests to Fujiya, Japanese guests to Naraya. From 1893, the Fujiya Hotel in Miyanoshita, Hakone, had an agreement with Naraya, a long-established inn nearby, to split guests this way. The hotel opened in 1878.
About this photo
The Fujiya Hotel, in Miyanoshita, Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, opened in 1878 (Meiji 11). Yamaguchi Sennosuke bought an old inn, also named Fujiya but written with different characters, and turned it into the hotel. It is said to be Japan's first true resort hotel.
From 1893 (Meiji 26), the hotel had an agreement with Naraya, a long-established inn nearby: Fujiya would take foreign guests, and Naraya Japanese guests. The arrangement lasted until 1912 (Taisho 1). Around 1900 (Meiji 33), when this photo album came out, the hotel was serving foreign guests only.
The main building of 1891 and the Western-style building of 1906 are Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan. After a major renovation, the hotel reopened in 2020, and you can still stay there.
