京都祇園 みぞ口來賀
Mizoguchi Raiga, Gion
About this photo
In a kimono covered with fine dots, she turns her body at an angle. Her hair is done up in a traditional style with a high topknot (mage), and a patterned han'eri shows at her collar. This is one photo from Kyoto Osaka Imayo Bijin Fuzoku (Beauties of Today in Kyoto and Osaka), an album published in 1903 (Meiji 36) by the photographer Ogawa Kazumasa, and the name of the hanamachi (geisha district), "Kyoto Gion," appears under the photo.
Gion is a hanamachi that grew up as the town in front of Yasaka Shrine. By the end of the Edo period there were 500 ochaya teahouses, and more than 1,000 people, geiko, maiko and others, are said to have worked there. The reading of the name is our best guess.
