藤岡ヨシエ子(宮崎)
Fujioka Yoshieko (Miyazaki)
About this photo
Her hair is puffed out wide from the front to the top of her head and put up high. Her kimono has a fine pattern, and at the neckline a dark han'eri (a decorative collar) and a white line show. A portrait from the photo album Nihon Bijincho (Album of Japanese Beauties), published in 1908 (Meiji 41). Her name and the word "Miyazaki" are printed below the photo.
Hair that juts forward like this was called hisashigami (eaves hair). During the Russo-Japanese War, when the battle for Hill 203 (Nihyakusan Kochi) at Lushun (Port Arthur, now part of Dalian, China) became big news, people saw the hill in the high, piled-up mage (bun), and also called hisashigami the "Nihyakusan Kochi mage" (Hill 203 bun).
The name Hill 203 came from the hill's height of 203 meters. The Japanese army took the hill in December 1904.
