大阪新町 木原席男菊
Otokogiku of Kiharaseki, Shinmachi
About this photo
Several crests stand out in white on her plain, dark kimono. Her obi has a large round flower pattern, with a white cloth above it. In one hand she grips the handle of something long and thin, like a closed umbrella. The name under the photo reads "Osaka Shinmachi, Kiharaseki Otokogiku."
By 1903 (Meiji 36), when the photo album Kyoto Osaka Imayo Bijin Fuzoku (Beauties of Today in Kyoto and Osaka) came out, Shinmachi had changed greatly. In 1869 (Meiji 2) a new pleasure quarter opened in Matsushima, and in a great fire on September 5, 1890 (Meiji 23), known as the Shinmachi Yake (Shinmachi Fire), 2,100 houses burned and most of the quarter was lost. In the Edo period, "Shinmachi" was the name of the pleasure quarter itself, not the name of a town. After this fire, "Shinmachi" gradually became the name of the whole surrounding area.
